Fantastic colours and kites in close up

Red Kites in close up on Christmas day

Water is again flowing here after 2 weeks of freezing weather, and the roads are again passable by all vehicles.

The image on the left is just one frame from one of three high definition video cameras I set recording on Christmas day.

Aiming for lunch
I've never seen anything as beautiful as the films taken on the day. The colours are exquisite and the kites and buzzards are full frame!

I'll compress a little from each and put them on the web when they are ready.
These movies will doubtless be on dvd in future, and hopefully on blu-ray too at a later date.

Yesterday was the first time that I was able to clear the drive down to the tarmac but that left the yard still covered in snow. This caused a mini traffic jam as there was nowhere to park once cars had arrive.. Today I managed to clear a few larger areas and the thaw should do the rest.

Although I'm sorry in one respect to see the snow go because of the visual side of things, its so good to be able to turn on a tap again and see water flowing, and to be able to start vehicles first time on the key.
Temperatures were recorded at -18.35˚ at the beginning of the freeze, and the last fling on Sunday was even worse as it turned the winter diesel to gloop.
An investment in additives for extreme weather is now on the cards.
As soon as my computer has compressed some footage I'll post a link to the film.
In the mean time..
May we wish you a Very Happy New Year.

It's a White Christmas at Gigrin. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

We have over 600 red kites to feed at present. Colin was a hero on Wednesday when he volunteered to cut up the 1500lbs of meat to save me the job over Christmas. The Meat Cutting machine had come back from the repair company despite the snow so that was very welcome.

We are closed on Christmas Day  but will be open on Boxing day again.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas

Winter Wonder Land

Needless to say, there are many hundreds of red kites feeding daily. They are thwarted from finding food themselves due the the temperature being below freezing 24 hrs a day.  -14 was recorded earlier this week with the result that streams are frozen over, and the farmhouse is without water..

Our main meat chopping machine has broken down so the standby (much smaller) meat cutter has been brought into service but is is incredibly slow in use. The entire weeks worth was cut up on this machine last friday by Colin and for which I am very thankful. Without a major thaw it will be the smaller machine for the forceable future .
