Red kite heads back from Ireland!

Tim Davis, the (voluntary) bird recorder for Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel, off the North Devon or South Wales coast depending on where you’re looking from, emailed me with the Red Kite pictured on the left.

It had been present on Lundy since 13 March, up to and including 23 March, at least. Red Kites remain an extreme rarity on Lundy (it being a small lump of granite in the middle of the sea!

The email was duly sent to Robert Straughan
Red Kite Project Officer of  RSPB Northern Ireland as the tag colour looked similar to those used there but turned out to be one of the kites that left Gigrin rehabilitation aviaries as a chick and entered the Republic of Ireland red kite reintroduction programme 3 years ago!
